Free-roaming Domestic and Feral Cats Kill an Estimated 2.4B Birds each Year
Keeping Cats Indoors Protects Birds, Cats, and Communities
Domestic cats are beloved companions—but when allowed to roam outdoors, they become a serious threat to birds and other wildlife. As a non-native predator, free-roaming cats kill an estimated 2.4 billion birds each year in the U.S., making them the number one human-caused source of bird mortality.
The MN Bird Coalition promotes responsible pet ownership by encouraging people to keep cats indoors or under direct supervision. Doing so keeps cats safer, protects wildlife, and helps prevent the spread of disease.
We oppose Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) programs for feral cats due to their ongoing impact on native species. Through education and community partnerships, we’re working toward solutions that benefit birds, cats, and people alike.
